All About Baby Cribs and How to Buy The Right One!
By Kim Proulx
The most important thing you will need in your baby's nursery is a crib! Let's just get that out of the way right from the start. That's why it's so important to know how to buy the right baby crib for your little one's first bedroom.
To help you make this important decision I've compiled a list of every type of baby crib you should consider, so you can learn about each type and decide which kind is best for your baby. Good thing is, all of our baby cribs are very safe, meeting all US safety requirements and in my opinion, they're all quite beautiful too!
Now it's up to you to measure your baby's nursery, think about the type of crib that will fit and satisfy your needs, choose the color and get that baby crib! Hopefully this baby crib buying guide will help make this task an easy one, so you can move onto the more important things like...rubbing your belly and daydreaming about becoming a mom!
Standard Cribs
A standard baby crib like the Storkcraft Libby Crib featured here is just a crib and nothing more. It doesn't convert into anything else besides a baby bed. The good thing about purchasing a standard crib is that it can be used from one child to the next and is designed to remain sturdy and safe to be passed down through generation after generation. The assembly process is easy and standard cribs are generally on the lower price range because of their simple construction. Standard cribs come in all types of styles, colors and shapes even including round cribs, so you have lots to choose from. |
Convertible Cribs
If you want a baby bed that turns into a toddler bed and big kid bed then convertible cribs like the DaVinci Kalani Crib featured here is what you need. These are transitional sleep spaces that start in a nursery as a crib then can be converted into a toddler bed by replacing the crib's front rail with a toddler guard rail. Later remove the toddler rail and it turns into a daybed. Several convertible cribs even transition into a full size bed with the use of separately purchased full size conversion rails. If you want your child to keep the same bed all throughout life then a convertible crib is the way to go. These are a little pricier than standard cribs, but since you're buying one bed that turns into four it will save you money in the long run. Convertible cribs come in many styles and colors, but they all provide a bed for baby and continue to offer a great sleep space for your child as he/she grows. |
Crib and Changing Table Combos
Satisfy your baby's sleep and diaper changing needs in one purchase by getting a crib and changing table combo like the AFG Athena Daphne Convertible Crib and Changer pictured here. Crib and Changing Table Combos include a baby crib with an attached changing table. These fit well in a space and give you the two most essential nursery furniture items together. Most of these combos can separate in later years and the crib can convert into a youth bed and the changer can be enjoyed as a night table. Having these two items so close together allows you to change baby's diaper every morning and night with little hassle. You can also keep baby's pajamas tucked inside on of the changer's drawers, so bedtime is easy. Change baby's diaper, change baby's clothes and put baby in bed in one spot...it doesn't get easier than that! |
Mini/Portable Cribs
There are mini cribs and portable cribs and also cribs that are mini and portable combined. The DaVinci Emily Mini Crib shown here is smaller than a standard size crib, but just as safe and stylish. It's the perfect choice for smaller nurseries. There are many types of mini cribs to choose from and some are even convertible and able to transform into a toddler bed and twin bed in later years. Foundations makes folding cribs that are great for a nursery and to take on trips. These cribs can be set-up in your baby's room and used as a regular baby bed, then folded down and taken to grandma's house, so your baby is always comfy sleeping wherever you go. Mini and Portable cribs are ideal for people with smaller homes and families who love to travel. |
Play Yards
I don't know what I would have done without a play yard. This is a play and sleep space all in one for a little baby. Play yards like the Foundations Celebrity Portable Play Yard featured here are easy to set-up in a baby's nursery, friend's home or hotel room. They offer your baby a place to sleep for naps and all night long, plus they're ideal for creating a safe play space for your little guy or girl. Simply set-up this play yard anywhere in your home and toss in some toys and let your baby have fun in a safe environment. Play yards definitely make a new mom's life easier! |
How to Pick a Baby Crib
Now that you know all about baby cribs it's time to pick one...or two! Consider getting a main crib for the nursery and a portable crib or play yard for trips. That's what I did and my girls always had familiar sleep spaces everywhere we went. This made traveling with a baby so much nicer! Read below to get easy steps to picking the right baby crib.
- Pick a Color: The easiest thing is to pick a color first that goes with your baby's nursery decor.
- Measure the Crib Space: You'll need to measure your nursery floor space where you'll put the crib. Compare those measurements to our standard, convertible or mini crib sizes to see which size is best for your baby's room.
- Pick a Style:Are you more into the modern look or do you prefer a more traditional nursery? Think about what goes best with the rest of your home when making this decision.
- Decide on a Budget:Figure out the highest amount of money you're willing to spend on a baby crib and use that as a guide to pick the right one for the nursery.
