Built to Last: Finding the Kids Bedroom Furniture You Really Need
Your kid wants something fun and colorful. You want something functional and convenient, with a little style that won't totally clash with the rest of your home decor. What's a furniture shopping mom or dad to do? Relax. Today's kids furniture meets everyone's needs. It can be fun and whimsical while still maintaining a sleek sense of style and visual appeal.
All you need is a few basic pieces to make your child's room cute and functional for the long haul.
What do you need?
There is no specific answer to this question that will work for everyone. What you need might not be what your toddler or teen wants, but there are a few items that any bedroom can't do without. You'll need a bed, of course, as well as storage for toys, clothes, books and maybe a desk or table and chair. A rug, some wall hangings, lamps, and other decor pieces will pull the room together.
The Kids Bed
This is perhaps the most important aspect of the room. The bed you choose should be spacious enough for your child to grow, while also providing durability to outlast even the most rambunctious of little ones. Beds made from hardwoods, metal, and other solid materials are more apt to last than those made from particle board or plastic. Remember, quality may seem to cost more in the short-term, but you will get your money's worth through years of use.
You may choose to go with a toddler bed when your child is around two years old which keeps them low to the ground and safe. A twin or full bed is also a good choice and will allow you to use the same bed as your child grows. For more compact areas with multiple children, bunk beds are the classic choice. If you have limited space for only one child, loft beds, beds with storage drawers and even bookcases at the headboards are also available.
Kids Clothing Storage
There are dressers, chest of drawers, and numerous other options for clothing storage. You'll need to consider how much storage you need, and the age of your child. Younger children have smaller clothing, and will therefore need less space. If you intend to use the dresser throughout your child's childhood, then you'll need to plan ahead and find something that will accommodate older children as well. Dressers and matching chests provide a more coordinated look. There are also armoires, which provide space for hanging and folded clothing in a more traditional furnishing option.
Additional Storage
What, if any, additional storage solutions you need will depend on your child, and what items you have. Bookcases, toy boxes, and baskets are ideal ways of keeping books, toys, art and school supplies, and other items neat and tidy when not in use.
