What You Need To Know Before Buying a Baby Stroller
By Kim Proulx
There are 3 important things to consider when purchasing a stroller for your family: (1) Safety, (2) Comfort, and (3) Convenience. Luckily, there are many types of baby strollers that will adhere to your family lifestyle and budget. Whether you are a new parent or expanding the family, here is some useful information about the many different types of strollers that you can choose from.
Travel System: A good choice for the traveling family. The Travel System stroller allows the car seat to snap in with an adaptor. This stroller type is good for infants and toddlers for the first couple years. It makes it is easier for parents to transport child from car to stroller without taking your little one out of the car seat. The only concern is that the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend keeping a baby in the car seat for long periods of time because there is an increased risk or plagiocephaly or misshapen skull.
Standard/Lightweight: By far the most popular because it is lightweight, folds down and has many features. You can find seats that lie flat, making it ideal for napping and is more comfortable for a baby. You can also find upright seats that can adjust to different angles for toddlers. Many Standard/Lightweight strollers have forward facing seats that also allow you to turn the seat and face it towards you. Wheel brakes are a definite must, so make sure you select a standard stroller that has one. Look for one with plenty of storage space and don't forget the canopy covers that help block out the sun.
Custom Strollers: Depending on your lifestyle and family size, Custom Strollers cater to your needs and make it convenient for you.
- Jogger: If you are physically active, then a Jogger stroller would be perfect for you. Jogger strollers typically come with 3 wheels and have either a swivel front wheel or stationary wheel. Swivel front wheels make it easier to maneuver; however, stationary front wheels are less likely to flip as it handles the road better. Hand brakes are also a definite must as they will stop the stroller properly from abrupt stops versus yanking the stroller with a strap that can also flip it over.
- Tandem/Side-by-Side: Best for parents with multiples. Tandem strollers have the seats arranged in a line that can face forward or face each other. If facing forward, the rear seat is usually raised, so your toddler can have a better view. A Side-by-Side stroller has seats that are next to each other. Joggers typically prefer side-by-side strollers.
- Sit and Stand: These strollers work well for families with a baby and toddler. The first seat is for the infant and is sometimes adjustable. The rear seat is made for a toddler and also allows your toddler to safely stand. It is a win-win for both baby and toddler.
Umbrella Strollers: This is the traditional style stroller for toddlers. Umbrella strollers are lightweight, fold easily, and are made for toddlers that can sit up without assistance. The reason for its name is because the handles look like traditional umbrella handles, making it comfortable to grip. They have a simple structure, generally with less seat support. The light weight and frame make is very easy to fold and save room for traveling.
The Classic Pram: Also a traditional style stroller for newborns to about 3 months or less. The seat is very similar to a bassinet and has oversized wheels for stability. Many have a detachable carry cot, making it easy to transport and especially comfortable for the baby.
Stroller Safety Tips
Be sure to inspect the stroller for safety mechanisms before buying and always take preemptive measures when operating.
- Rear Brakes: Find a stroller with rear wheel brakes that can be easily applied by tapping with your foot. Always apply wheel brakes even if you are stopping for just a moment.
- Seatbelts: For upright stroller seats, make sure there is a 3-point or 5-point harness. 3-point harnesses have straps around baby's waste and fastens in front. 5-point harnesses have straps around baby's shoulders and better secures baby in seat. Child should always be strapped in stroller, even if it is not moving.
- Stability: You want to find a stroller that has a good, sturdy weight and is well balanced. Before purchasing, take it for a test drive and make sure it is easy to maneuver and is stable so your child doesn't get jerked around on bumpy terrain.
Now that you are familiar with the many types of strollers that are available, keep these parameters in mind when you go out and make your purchase. Hopefully you can make an informed decision that will fit well for your family's lifestyle, and above all, keep your child safe and comfortable.
